Tamil tinsel world's icon and ace director K. Balachander being conferred the most coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award (April 30), though a belated move, is news that makes every avid film-goer delighted, excited and proud. ‘KB sir' has been the mentor of many a reigning film star. He had a staunch belief that cinema, as a social weapon, could be intellectually utilised for the good of society. His portrayal of the hard realities of the mundane life, the emotional outbursts of his diverse characters, the timing, tenor and the use of the “punch dialogue,” the distinctive nuances and brilliance have been unmatched and have always delighted viewers. He was also the first director to keep at bay the influence and dominance of hero worship.
