Only days after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for Nirbhaya’s rapists, comes another case starkly similar to the Delhi incident — the abduction, rape and murder of another young woman at Rohtak. The bone-chilling incident should remind us of the need to revisit the important issue of women’s safety and security. The alarming rise in rape incidents shows that there is no fear of the law which has also brought acid attacks, stalking and voyeurism under its purview. Several bodies such as government agencies, women’s organisations and human rights associations may express their empathy with the survivors but mere sympathy is no solution. To reduce this heinous crime and to protect women, there is a need to ensure stringent punishment. This should also include capital punishment.
