A great player

Ricky Ponting’s retirement will bring to an end the era of the old crop of players who were instrumental in taking the Australian cricket team to its pinnacle of success.

He is certainly one of the greatest batsmen of the present generation. He always had an appetite for big matches. Who can forget the 2003 World Cup final against India? His outstanding qualities were his fighting spirit and fierce passion with which he led his team.

It is interesting to read Ponting’s remark that he is glad he got the opportunity to finish on his terms. I wonder how many players feel that way.

Ponting’s decision should inspire our sportsmen to decide when to quit on their own terms.
