That the Medical Council of India has been dissolved and its corruption agents have been brought to book is heartening. For long, the MCI has been holding medical colleges to ransom. Colleges with adequate infrastructure were denied recognition, whereas colleges with barely enough staff found it easy to get even a deemed status. I hope the seven-member panel of eminent doctors will do justice to the medical profession and the fraternity.

The MCI's dissolution is a step in the right direction. All those found guilty of corruption should be punished. It was not just about accepting money to recognise medical colleges. The end products of the medical colleges thus recognised — doctors — are inadequately trained. They pose a serious threat to the people who go to them for treatment.
