Save Tamizh

To mark the occasion of the first Tamizh Chemmozhi Maanadu (World Classical Tamil Conference), Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should pass two orders: At the nursery school level, children should be taught the pronunciation of the following letters correctly: ‘zha' in Tamizh, the difference between the one-loop ‘na' and the two-loop ‘nna,' and between ‘la' and ‘lla.'

And no one, irrespective of his or her status, should be allowed to stand before the television camera and microphone on public platforms if they cannot pronounce these letters properly.

The print media spell ‘Tamizh' as Tamil. Hence, people —especially the younger generation with an English medium background — spell and pronounce the word wrong.

If Maargazhi (the Tamizh month) can be spelt with ‘zhi' to emphasise “zha,” why not spell Tamizh too similarly? People will eventually get used to it and pronounce it right.
