Salman’s acquittal

The acquittal of Bollywood star Salman Khan gives rise to this question: why has it taken so many years for the legal system to conclude the trial?

There is an acute need to tone up the criminal justice machinery so that it does not take such a long time for trial courts to dispense justice in such cases. Acquittals, notably in criminal cases where high-profile celebrities are involved, should not raise any sort of perception in the mind of the common man about the conduct and efficiency of our investigative and prosecution agencies much less the neutrality of our courts. Justice should not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
