Rein them in

Konda Surekha, Andhra Pradesh’s Women and Child Welfare Minister, and some other Congress MLAs have stepped up their strident demand to make Jagan Mohan Reddy Chief Minister. These leaders, we can safely assume, will only be perfunctory in their duties until the issue is settled. The Congress high command should once again send a strong warning to the legislators and Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and instruct them to extend support to Chief Minister Rosaiah. The Chief Minister’s post cannot be given to a person on the basis of shrill noise made by his supporters and admirers.

Politics in Andhra Pradesh is taking an ugly turn. Some YSR loyalists are making a vain attempt to fish in troubled waters. They are portraying Jagan Mohan Reddy as the next Chief Minister much against the wishes of the Congress high command. It is unfortunate that despite Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy stating categorically that he will abide by the party’s decision, his followers continue to defy it. The Congress should not give in to threats of resignation by Ministers installed by YSR.

The Congress should get rid of the elements which display traits of mobocracy. It should resist them and demonstrate to the people that it is a major national party.

The statement by some Ministers, and MLAs of Andhra Pradesh that Jagan Mohan Reddy is their Chief Minister is nothing but an act of gross indiscipline. Unless the party high command cracks the whip and suspends or expels some members, indiscipline will not come to an end.

Administration in the State has come to a grinding halt. The matter cannot be postponed until after the elections in other States are complete.
