On honesty

January 31, 2011 12:39 am | Updated 12:39 am IST

It is lamentable that black money comprises almost 50 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (“Honesty is indivisible,” Jan. 29). The approach towards corruption in the lowest tiers of public life can very well be projected to personify the massive scams sweeping the country today. In day-to-day life, corruption has become a normal and acceptable trait. A government officer who accepts or demands a bribe is never a topic of discussion, as it is accepted as being normal. If he does not accept a bribe, he is heralded as someone who is breaking the norms of the system made by the “Triad” — the corrupt business class, the political class and the executive. To address the problem of corruption, we need a systemic, bottom-up approach.
