New Foreign Secretary

The “curtailment” of Sujatha Singh’s service/tenure reminds us of the infamous removal of A.P. Venkateswaran by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1987 (“ >Jaishankar is Foreign Secretary ,” Jan.29). While Rajiv Gandhi’s was an undignified and sudden outburst, Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have gone for the silent kill. Mr. Modi has every right to appoint his trusted officers to top posts, but the abruptness in naming Mr. Jaishankar is certain to create bad feeling and give the Opposition fresh ammunition.
