Dr. Zachariah’s article “Rethinking medical education in India” (Sept. 8) could not have come at a more appropriate time. As super specialists reign supreme, patients continue to shell out huge amounts by way of consultation fees and diagnostics, not to mention the cost of drugs. The concept of family doctor and family medicine has been given the go-by. While we try to follow most of the British systems of education, even in the field of medicine, why do not we try to bring the GPs back into vogue? The writer’s suggestions should open the eyes of our medical educationists and the government.
