The editorial “Justice for Kargil heroes” (June 5) could not have come at a better time. “For God and the soldier we adore, in time of danger, not before! The danger passed, and all things righted, God is forgotten and the soldier slighted,” said Rudyard Kipling. While Brigadier Devinder Singh's case definitely needs to be reconsidered, there is a need in both the Ministry of Defence and the Army Headquarters to dust off the files in the cupboard and re-write the Kargil war history. Initiation of action against officers who erred is the least that should be done to complete the justice process.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony and the UPA government would earn kudos if the cases of Brigadier Singh and others of the 121 Brigade are re-examined. They are all victims of Lt. Gen. Kishan Pal's falsified battle records, as exposed by the Armed Forces Tribunal. As the editorial rightly says, exposing the truth may be painful but the Army and the nation will emerge the stronger for it.
