The article “Bangalore bursting at the seams” (Open Page, June 13) reflects the traffic situation in all Indian metros. When half of the population lives in towns and cities which account for less than 30 per cent of the total area, the result is over-stretching of the available infrastructure.
Better impose some restrictions on migration to cities and develop rural areas along Abdul Kalam's dream project, PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas).

The article should be an eye-opener to the authorities not only in Bangalore, but also in other cities. Talk of traffic snarls and the only response is flyovers/road widening. Flyovers push the problem to the next junction. And road-widening does not significantly increase the road width. One major reason for the clogged up roads is the presence of cars — big and small. A two-pronged approach is needed to get over the nightmare of daily commuting: effective public transport and reducing the number of cars on the roads.
