Aadhaar linkage

February 09, 2017 03:46 am | Updated 03:46 am IST

It is strange that despite the Supreme Court’s stay on mandatory use of Aadhaar, the Central government is still insisting on linking two Centrally sponsored student scholarship schemes to promote enrolment of the girl child and economically weaker sections in schools with Aadhaar (“Aadhar linkage to school subsidy schemes worries HRD Ministry”, Feb.6). In other words, those poor students who do not have Aadhaar cards will be deprived of benefits. As children are admitted to schools after verification of their identity with relation to their parents having valid identification, to now deprive eligible students, especially girls and those belonging to economically weaker sections, of benefits is illogical and runs contrary to the concept of social justice. What is the intention of the government despite its tall claims of empowering women and the weaker sections?
