Resorting to harsh linguistic profundity is unbecoming of the country’s Prime Minister (“PM Modi terms political rivals in U.P. a ‘SCAM’,” Feb.5). Before such verbal abuse, he ought to have given thought to the amenability of his party’s name to the formation of acronyms with equally negative connotations. The holder of the exalted office of Prime Minister is not supposed to say or do anything that goes to diminish his stature. Nothing could be more uncharitable than saying that “political parties seeking details of the surgical strikes were unhappy that our soldiers came back alive in the operation”. It is a misconception that barbs are essential to pull off election victories.

I am afraid that publishing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s rejoinder quite immediately after reporting Narendra Modi’s “SCAM” remark was not in good taste. It would have been just and fair had the response been given space right after covering the Prime Minister’s speech in full. Let Mr. Yadav try to take the sting out of Mr. Modi’s term. The question is whether The Hindu should have covertly joined forces with him.
