U.N. post for Indian diplomat

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Indian diplomat Atul Khare as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

Mr. Khare was earlier appointed by the previous Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, as his Special Representative for Timor-Leste and Head of the U.N. Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste.

A 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service official, Mr. Khare had served as Deputy High Commissioner in Mauritius, Counsellor at the U.N. Permanent Mission and Charg? d'affaires of the Indian Embassy in Senegal.

At the U.N. he has served as Chief of Staff and later as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General with the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor.
