The Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government is on the brink of collapse following the resignation of rebel MLAs. The  Cabinet is expected to send a resolution  to Governor Vajubhai Vala, seeking postponement of the monsoon session of the legislature that is scheduled to begin on July 12.

Yamuna Expressway accident: 29 killed as bus hits divider and falls through gap between flyovers

Twenty-nine passengers were killed when an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus hit the divider and fell through a gap between two flyovers on the Yamuna Expressway on July 8 morning. There were more than 50 passengers in the vehicle that plunged 40 feet down.

China says U.S. responsible for Iran’s decision to expand uranium enrichment

China  on Monday alleged that “unilateral bullying” by the United States was the “root cause” of Iran’s decision to expand uranium enrichment. While regretting Iran’s announcement as a breach of the nuclear deal, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made it plain that Washington’s policy of imposing “maximum pressure” on  Iran  was the “root cause of the current crisis”. He compared the U.S.’s international conduct to a “worsening tumour” that needed to be removed.

British Airways has been fined more than £183 million after computer hackers last year stole bank details from hundreds of thousands of passengers, its parent group IAG said Monday.

Apex court throws out plea to allow women to enter mosques for prayers

The  Supreme Court  on Monday dismissed a plea by the State president of the Kerala unit of the Akhil Bharatha Hindu Mahasabha to allow Muslim women to enter mosques for offering prayers and to shed the “purdah” system. “Let a Muslim woman challenge it,” Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi observed orally.

Congress, BJP exchange barbs on Karnataka developments

Reverberations of the political developments unfolding at great speed in Karnataka were evident in the  Lok Sabha  on Monday with the Congress and the BJP going head to head on the issue and exchanging barbs. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is also deputy leader of the Lok Sabha, said categorically the BJP-ruled Central government had nothing to do with the developments and hadn’t put any pressure on any Opposition MP or MLA to switch parties.
