Abhijit Banerjee among three to receive Economics Nobel
The 2019 Nobel Prize for economics goes to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Monday. The research conducted by the 2019 Economic Sciences Laureates has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty. In just two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research.

Postpaid mobile phone services without internet restored in Kashmir
Mobile phones in Kashmir buzzed back to life on Monday, connecting 40 lakh post-paid subscribers to their families and friends in the country, the Valley and their neighbourhoods after 72 days but without any internet facilities. The phones started ringing from noon as promised by the government on Saturday and people across the Valley quickly dialled out to speak to those they had been unable to since August 5, when the Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and reorganised the state into two union territories.

INX Media case: Delhi court reserves order on ED’s plea to arrest P. Chidambaram
A Delhi court on Monday reserved order on the Enforcement Directorate’s plea seeking to arrest and interrogate former finance minister P. Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case. “I will pass orders on the applications tomorrow,” special judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar said.

VHP wants to light lamps at Ayodhya disputed site on Diwali
Seers led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday demanded that they be allowed to light “thousands of lamps” and do 'puja' at the disputed site in Ayodhya on October 27, Diwali. The Divisional Commissioner (DC), Manoj Mishra, has, however, reportedly denied them permission. A delegation of seers from Ayodhya and VHP spokesperson Sharad Sharma met the DC and handed him a memorandum containing the demand.
