Drawing power lines over farm lands opposed

February 12, 2018 07:26 pm | Updated 07:26 pm IST - ERODE

Stating that installation of high-tension power cables over the agriculture land will only benefit the private power generation companies, farmers in the district wanted the project to be stopped.

They said that the proposed line to supply electricity generated from wind mills to Karnataka will traverse over agricultural lands in Tirupur, Erode, Salem, and Dharmapuri for which compensation will not be given.

They said that farmers have to bear the risk arising out of accidents and fear that they will not be able to sell their lands.

They said that agriculture activities will completely be curbed if the electric lines pass through their land and they will lose their livelihood for ever.

They wanted alternative methods like underground cable system to be worked out with change in the route.

The project will benefit only the private companies who earn huge profits by taking away the rights of poor farmers, they added.
