All-women crew operates flight

An all-women crew of Air India operated its service on Chennai - Coimbatore - Chennai sector on International Women's Day on Thursday.

The flight operated under the command of Captain Ramya Rengaraj and first officer Vrindha Nair. All the five cabin crew were also women.

The flight landed at Coimbatore International Airport at 2.20 p.m. with 127 passengers from Chennai.

On arrival at the airport, the women pilots and cabin crew were greeted with bouquet and flowers by airport director R. Mahalingam and Air India staff led by station manager Girija Ramesh. The crew later cut a cake at the terminal.

“It was proud flight for us on International Women's Day which was made possible by Air India. Women are capable of achieving greater heights and men need to support them,” Ms. Rengaraj told reporters here. The return flight to Chennai with 170 passengers left the airport at 3.05 p.m.

Earlier on the day, Airport Authority of India (AAI) honoured Padma Shri awardee and 99-year-old yoga exponent from Coimbatore V. Nanammal and Assistant District Collector Saranya Ari. Ms. Nanammal spoke on women's health and demonstrated yoga for women employees at the airport. Ms. Ari inaugurated coin-operated sanitary napkin vending machines at the airport. Passengers at the airport also had fun moments when the staff of IndiGo Airlines performed a flash mob as part of Women's Day celebrations.
