Farmers from Angol, Kanbargi and Vadgaon on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the Belgaum City Corporation office to express anguish over the death of their cattle which had consumed grass that had been subjected to fogging by the corporation.

Led by Corporator Netaji Jadhav of the Opposition in the Corporation Council and Yellappa Tarihalkar and Suresh Pathak, the farmers shouted slogans against the Corporation alleging that the latter had been negligent while carrying out fogging as a step to prevent the spread of A(H1N1), dengue and gastroenteritis.

Mr. Jadhav said the farmers lost six buffaloes and one cow after the animals consumed grass in open fields where fogging had been carried out by Corporation workers recently. Thus, the Corporation should release compensation to the farmers, he said.

Mayor Yellappa Kurbar and leader of the ruling group, Sambhaji Patil, arrived at the scene of demonstration and assured the farmers that they would consider their demand.
