Prime Minister’s statement ahead of Winter Session of Parliament

Before the onset of the Winter Session of the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed media persons outside the Parliament.

Here is the full statement:

Twenty-sixth November, 1949. On this very day the constitution of India was adopted. The Government of India has decided to celebrate it each year as Constitution Day. Our effort is so that awareness about the constitution should increase across the country, students should read the Preamble of the constitution, and that it should gradually become part of our nature. It is a matter of good fortune that this is also the 125th anniversary year of Dr. BR Ambedkar, a great man who played a key role in the making of the constitution. This context is very inspiring and it is due to this that, as you must have seen, Parliament is glowing these days and I am convinced that during the session too, Parliament will glow from the inside with good thoughts, good discussions and good, innovative ideas.

I met respected leaders from each party yesterday. We discussed in a pleasant atmosphere and agreed in one voice that Parliament should function well. There can be no centre of dialogue like Parliament. The taking of positions, the articulation of differences and dialogue -- these are the soul of Parliament. The field of the nation is available for other things and I am happy that all parties have adopted a positive viewpoint for taking stands, disagreeing and engaging. I hope that we Parliamentarians will not be found wanting in fulfilling the expectations that countrymen have from our Parliament.

Today, 26th November, is the day of the constitution. Our constitution is a ray of hope and a beacon that shows us the path. It always lights up our path. And when I say ‘Hope’ I mean H for Harmony, O for Opportunity, P for People’s Participation, E for Equality. Thanks a lot, friends.
