A small statue of Marilyn Monroe, in her iconic pose from her 1955 hit film “The Seven Year Itch”, has been stolen from the top of the Ladies of Hollywood Gazebo, a popular landmark at Hollywood Boulevard. The gazebo, created in 1993 and dedicated to the late actor in 1994, celebrates women in films from different cultures who brought a change to the film industry. The statues of Dolores Del Rio, Dorothy Dandridge, Mae West, and Anna May Wong hold up the gazebo while a small statue of Marilyn Monroe is on top of it.

A powerful earthquake jolted northwestern Japan late on June 18, causing minor injuries to 21 people and a brief evacuation of coastal homes until the risk of a tsunami passed.

More than 1,500 people took shelter at evacuation centers in Murakami city and elsewhere in Niigata prefecture, but many of them left Wednesday morning to check their homes. Public broadcaster NHK showed people using flattened cardboard boxes as mattresses to sleep on in a school gym. Many others, including children, were still awake and sitting against the walls. Bullet train service was suspended in parts of the region because of power outages and for safety checks, but were functioning normally Wednesday morning. About 9,000 households in Yamagata and Niigata lost power, according to Tohoku Electric Power Co.

Crowds of protesters camped outside the Khartoum army headquarters were violently dispersed that day by armed men in military fatigues, leaving dozens dead and hundreds wounded, according to doctors and witnesses.

They had been gathered at the complex since April, initially seeking the army's help to oust longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir, and later to demand the generals hand power to a civilian administration.

Akram said some of the armed men wore police uniforms, while others were in military fatigues generally worn by the feared Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group.

He said it was difficult to count how many they were, but the gunmen arrived in trucks and raided the sit-in from all sides.
