Pope Francis has arrived at a stadium to celebrate the first-ever papal Mass in the Arabian Peninsula, the birthplace of Islam.

The pontiff arrived at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in his open-top popemobile, waving to the gathered tens of thousands.

Earlier on Tuesday, the pontiff visited and prayed with the faithful at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Abu Dhabi.

Seven people died and another was seriously injured in a building fire in a wealthy Paris neighbourhood on Monday night, the fire service said.

"The toll could still increase because the fire is still in progress on the 7th and 8th floors" of the eight-storey block, a fire service spokesman said at the scene. The blaze in the French capital's trendy 16th arrondissement also left 27 people — including three firefighters — with minor injuries.

The leaders of Germany and Japan said they will try to minimize the global economic impact from Britain’s upcoming departure from the European Union and pledged to defend free trade in the face of rising protectionism. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Britain to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

Last Friday, Japan and the EU ushered in a landmark trade deal that creates one of the world’s largest free trade areas. Combined, the two sides account for almost a third of the world’s economy.
