Kashmir funeral

On Friday, an encounter broke out between security personnel and terrorists, after which the body of one terrorist, identified as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Umar Malik, was recovered, along with an AK-47.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid on Saturday said identification of the four terrorists killed earlier in the day is underway.

At least seven rebels and an Indian army soldier were killed in gunbattles in disputed Kashmir. The joint funeral of rebel commander Umar Malik and Wakar Sheikh was held in Malikgund village, south of Srinagar.

10th Gay Games

The Gay Games will kick off in Paris on August 4, bringing together participants from around the world for a week of sport and culture in a carnival atmosphere.

“We want to promote self-improvement rather than victory at all costs”, said Pascale Reinteau, co-chair of the Gay Games, which aim to promote equality under the motto “all equal”.

Six years before hosting the 2024 Olympic Games, Paris will welcome more than 10,000 participants from 90 countries around the world, including some where homosexuality is illegal or repressed.

The sports village at the City Hall in central Paris was inaugurated at 9 a.m. (12.30 p.m. IST) on August 4, followed by an International Memorial Rainbow Run on behalf of victims of AIDS, breast cancer and discrimination.

The opening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. (10.30 p.m. IST) at the Jean Bouin stadium in the city's southwest with a parade of 10,000 athletes and a show on the theme of coming out and equality.

The party will continue at one of Paris most emblematic monuments, the Grand Palais, which is being transformed into a giant nightclub for an evening hosted by Israeli DJ Offer Nissim.

There will be competitions in 36 disciplines throughout the week across 67 sites in the Paris region, as well as civic, sports and cultural events outside the City Hall. The sailing competition will take place at the port of Le Havre in northern France.

The 10th edition of the Gay Games will come to a close with a ceremony outside the City Hall on August 11.

With their heads bowed and wearing orange robes, the members of the boys’ soccer team rescued from almost three weeks trapped in a cave in northern Thailand on Saturday completed their time as novice Buddhist monks.

About 300 people gathered for the ceremony on a rainy morning that saw the boys leave temple life to return to their families. Those present gave alms flowers, food, money as a gesture of their religious devotion.

At the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Britain's Johanna Konta, who thrashed Serena Williams earlier, was sent packing in the quarter-finals when she suffered a 7-6(4) 6-3 to fourth seed Elise Mertens. Mertens, bidding for her fourth title of the year, moves into a semi-final against fifth seeded Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu.
