From female folk singers entertaining the audience to only-female music requests, the Prasar Bharati-run Radio Kashmir Srinagar (RKS) on Thursday created history in its broadcasting timeline by having only women run the show for the whole day on International Woman’s Day.

“The idea was to celebrate women’s contribution to broadcasting in Jammu & Kashmir by dedicating the day to female artists and content related to women’s issues,” Radio Kashmir Srinagar director Syed Humayun Qaisar told The Hindu .

The special broadcast started at 6 a.m. with Sufiyana music, where lyrics of only female artists were selected. Female anchors of the musical shows picked up only women’s requests of songs and music for their entertainment. A group of female Gojri artists provided entertainment in the afternoon. Women participants debated on mother-child relations and the women-centric issues in special shows organised on the occasion. Shokiya Qureshi, an anchor who did two live shows on Thursday, said, “It was a unique experience.”

“Around 35 women artists, including announcers and anchors, ran several shows for an 18-hour broadcast. It has happened for the first time ever in the history of the station. It’s a proud moment for all of us,” said Mr. Qaisar.

Radio Kashmir Srinagar was established on July 1, 1948.
