Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat on Tuesday said strongest possible action would be taken if there was any leak about the Karnataka Assembly elections schedule.
At a press conference in New Delhi, where he announced the Assembly poll schedule, Mr. Rawat said, “Actions legally and administratively befitting will be taken.”
Prior to the Election Commission of India's (ECI) official announcement of the poll process, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya allegedly tweeted partially wrong information about the election schedule. “Karnataka will vote on 12May2018, counting on 18May2018,” he allegedly wrote in the now-deleted tweet.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala captured a screenshot of the deleted tweet and questioned the credibility of the ECI. “BJP becomes the ‘Super Election Commission’ as they announce poll dates for Karnataka even before the EC. Credibility of EC is on test. Will EC now issue notice to BJP President, Amit Shah & register an FIR against BJP IT Head for leaking EC’s confidential information?,” he said.
