The CBI on Tuesday arrested two Income Tax officials, including Joint Commissioner of Income Tax S. Shivanandan in Odisha, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh from a person.

According to the agency, Income Tax sleuths had raided house of an individual R.K. Shukla in Dhinkanal, 25 km from State capital Bhubanesawar, for alleged tax evasion.

Mr. Shukla approached the CBI and claimed that one I-T officer Narayan Nayak was allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh for stopping an enquiry against him, the agency said.

A trap was laid and Mr. Nayak was arrested allegedly while accepting the bribe from Mr. Shukla, the CBI said, adding searches were conducted at his residence which led the sleuths to Joint Commissioner’s doorsteps as some of the documents seized from his house indicated Mr. Shaivanandan’s involvement.

The CBI immediately searched the premises of the Joint Commissioner and claimed to have made recoveries of documents about amassing huge immovable assets.

The CBI arrested Mr. Shivanandan and both were being questioned.
