Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters clashed with the police in Jaigaon town of Alipurduar district on Sunday. The incident took place when a GJM rally was stopped at Jaigaon by the district police and GJM supporters allegedly resorted to stone-throwing.
While at least a dozen GJM supporters were injured in the clash, about five police personnel sustained injuries. However, district police authorities remained tight-lipped on the matter. When contacted, Alipurduar SP, Avaru Ravindranath, said: “I am busy. I cannot talk now.”
Locals said there was tension in the area and a large contingent of police had been deployed.
Meanwhile, at Sukna in Darjeeling district, Gorkhaland supporters staged a demonstration near a police outpost. Earlier in the day, GJM supporters took out rallies in the Chowkbazar area of the hills in protest against the alleged police atrocities on pro-Gorkhaland agitators. The development comes a day after GJM supporters clashed with the police in Darjeeling district’s Sukna area as the police stopped GJM cadres who tried to “forcibly” enter the Siliguri town, the police said.
