Genome Foundation (GF) has unanimously elected former chief vigilance officer Y V Chowdhary as its chairman with effect from April 2, with the current chairman and former governor C Rangararajan to become the ‘Emeritus Chairman’.

The GF has been recognised as a scientific research organisation (SIRO) with the main aim to identify genetic diseases of hereditary nature such as beta thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia, haemophilia and other lifestyle diseases affecting millions of people in India.

Besides counselling patients to prevent, mitigate or overcome the disease burden, GF is carrying out targeted research to find out appropriate treatment models through precision and personalised medicine, said MD K.P.C. Gandhi.

Welcoming Mr. Chowdhary to GF, he said it would strengthen the foundation’s ongoing activities and help take it to the next level in achieving its objectives, said a press release on Tuesday.
