Sitting by the side of a pavement he takes a bunch of sticks and with a long a rope he weaves them together and in a jiffy a cane stool is made which you feel like possessing it. Om Prakash his son Babloo Kardham and others hailing from Bharatpur in Rajasthan eke out itinerant life making and selling these cane stools and chairs with backrest. They are made of strong cane sticks and a kind of reed that is woven into a rope.
“There are natural and will not give heat to your body unlike those made out of plastic ones, ” explains Om Prakash. They sell each stool at Rs 250 to Rs 350 depending on the bargain capacity of the customers. As they are made of natural material , they look ethnic and beautify the interiors. One could find small groups of people from Rajasthan settled all along the road towards Karimnagar, Jangaon and others camping besides the main thoroughfares engaging in this work. “We do not have work back homes. We have land but it is not fertile.
Hence we are into this trade,” Om Prakash says adding that they move all over the country. As they move from place to place, they get the materials on transport. The cane sticks and reed in bundles through trucks. Once in two or three months they go to their homes and soon return to their work. Besides, the cane stools, they also sell ceramic vases for garden and interiors specially made in Rajasthan.
