Heat wave conditions and a depleting water table at the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) reservoir – the only source of water for Karimnagar, Warangal, Sircilla, Siddipet, Vemulawada and other towns – has become a cause of concern for the people of Karimnagar town.

The water table at the reservoir, located on the outskirts of Karimnagar town, has come down to 4.2 tmc ft against the storage capacity of 24 tmc ft. The dead storage of the reservoir is fixed at 2.1 tmc ft and the prevailing heat wave would cause evaporation of around 1 tmc ft of water in peak summer.

Municipal authorities usually supply 27 million litres of water per day (MLD), which they are unable to do so now owing to the decline in reservoir levels. Residents complain that while the authorities had promised daily water supply, they were unable to provide water even for an hour every alternate day. Prior to the current predicament, they would get water for an hour-and-a-half every alternate day.

Meanwhile, the authorities had installed boosters and lifted water to the filter bed to supply water to the residents of the town. The water supply had come down to 20-25 million litres a day due to the depleting water table in the reservoir.

Expressing concern, Mayor S. Ravinder Singh promised to ensure that there would be drinking water problem in the town. “We had installed boosters and lifted water from the reservoir. The water would be supplied as promised on every alternate day, but there would be some changes in the timings,” he maintained.
