Warangal in the limelight again

District has the reputation of being a hotbed of people’s movements

January 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - WARANGAL:

Be it under kings of various dynasties or the present-day democracy, Warangal district has always been in focus. People of the region are known for defying the ruling regimes and exploitative forces, however powerful they may be.

People here are believed to be more politically active and the district has the reputation of being a hotbed of people’s movements. It is here that the mass movements were either born, nurtured or took shape in various hues. Warangal residents are known to patronise revolutionary movements aimed at the good of the public in a big way, be it the Telangana Armed Struggle, the naxal movement or political movements such as the stir for statehood of Telangana.

Fight against Nizam

The easy and loving nature of people has lent invaluable support to several individuals and movements which thrived and succeeded here. Cutting across gender, caste and economic differences, people had taken part in the movement against the tyrannical Nizam’s government before its merger with the Indian Union. In the later period, people also revolted against the feudal elements in the rural areas and supported the naxal parties, which espoused the cause of the downtrodden and poor. Villages and educational institutions turned into ‘incubation centres’ and produced leadership for such movements from time to time.

The role of the district in the recent Telangana movement has been substantial and the TRS has held the place as a stronghold of its activities. The party and leadership always banked on the public patronage it got from the people of Warangal, besides others.

Gesture to TRS

A good gesture was shown by the people to the TRS, which led the second separate Telangana movement and won nine Assembly seats out of 12 seats and two Parliament seats in Warangal district in the 2014 elections.

Now the district has two Ministers – Kadiam Srihari and A Chandulal -- and Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary, who also belongs to the district. However, the people have always remained discontent as rulers from time to time failed to rise to their expectations on generating employment, granting new industries and bringing about development.
