United Muslim Forum to support MIM, TRS

Jamiat-e-Ulama is yet to take a stand

The United Muslim Forum (UMF), a body comprising religious leaders, has decided to support the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in the upcoming General Elections.

In a statement released to the media, the body said that it is supporting MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi’s candidature from the Hyderabad parliamentary constituency. It also announced that it will throw its weight behind the TRS in the remaining 16 parliamentary seats in the State.

The move is no different from the UMF’s stand in the recent Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the Jamiat-e-Ulama Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (JeUTAP), a body of Muslim clerics, so far has not made its stand clear as to which party it will support in the General Elections. While it had lent its support to the mahakutami in the Assembly elections, the body is yet to make a formal announcement for the upcoming polls.

Speaking to The Hindu , JeUTAP president Hafiz Peer Shabbir said: “As of now, we are touring Andhra Pradesh. We will begin speaking to people of Telangana in a couple of days and then make a formal announcement. However, one thing is clear. We will support the party which will ensure protection of the Constitution of India and the sharia. These two things are very crucial for us.”
