With the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) starting procurement of cotton, there was unprecedented rush of farmers at Enumamula agricultural market here on Tuesday.

Mild tension prevailed as the farmers demanded more price for cotton and tried to barge into the market committee office.

The police had to rush in and take control of the situation.

The farmers alleged that CCI quoted price as low as Rs 2,500 per quintal on the pretext of moisture content and low quality.

However, the actual Minimum Support Price (MSP) was fixed at Rs 4,100 per quintal.

Left party leader Gali Vinod Kumar visited the market and interacted with the agitating farmers.

He demanded that the government ensure a price of Rs 6,000 per quintal.

He said farmers came to market with high expectations as festivals are round the corner.

However, the CCI officials in collusion with the local traders are trying to deprive the farmers of their genuine price on some or other pretext, he charged.

A farmer from Hasanparthy, Amarender, said they toiled day and night anticipating good price for cotton produce but they were given a raw deal at the market.

“What we get is not enough to meet our investment. Where do we go from here,” he sought to know as tears rolled down.
