As heavy rains continued to lash the upstream areas of Buggavagu, the stream overflowed causing water-logging in low-lying areas of Karepalli (Singareni) mandal headquarters town on Sunday.
Water from the swollen stream encircled the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) building in Karepalli on Sunday morning.
The parents of several schoolchildren had to wade through knee-deep water to enter into the building to see their children during the visiting hours on Sunday afternoon. Some of the parents took away their children home, sources said. Alerted by the staff concerned, a team of officials including the District Educational Officer Madhusudhan rushed to the KGBV.
Noticing the hardships faced by the students due to inundation of the entrance of the building complex and clogging of drains, the officials made alternative arrangements for temporary accommodation of the KGBV students at the nearby Model School located at a higher level.
The authorities have instructed the staff to ensure unclogging of the drains and carrying out necessary repairs in the KGBV building in a day or two.
Meanwhile, swollen streams disrupted vehicular traffic in Julurupadu, Konijerla, Penuballi, Kallur and Thallada mandals in the district and Lakshmidevipalli and various other parts of Bhadradri-Kothagudem district. Electricity poles were uprooted under the impact of heavy rains and gusty winds at Nemalipuri village in Enkoor mandal on Sunday, sources added. Incessant rain in the catchment areas of Munneru river has pushed up the water level in the river at Teerthala in Khammam rural mandal.
Coal production in the opencast projects in Yellandu and Sattupalli mandals was paralysed as heavy rains pounded the coal belt region for the second day in a row.
