Peddapalli has bagged the prestigious Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya (neat and clean toilets) award from the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The award would be presented at a function in New Delhi on Monday.

This is the second time that the district has been chosen for the national award of Swachh Sarvekshan Grameen under the Swachh Bharath Mission programme. Last year, it had secured third place in the country and first in south India for its open defecation-free (ODF) status with the construction of 1.35 lakh individual sanitary latrines and its utilisation under ODF plus programme.

Freshly, under the Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya campaign taken up in January this year, the district had painted 1,24,161 toilets with local art motifs to propagate the importance of utilisation of toilets and keeping them clean.

Collector A. Sri Devasena was personally involved in the campaign, educating people to keep toilets clean. She also involved women self-help groups for the beautification of toilets with local art so that people would own them, thereby helping in sustained use.
