State’s stand on irrigation projects sought

October 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - WARANGAL:

BJP has demanded that the State government come clear on irrigation projects being taken up in the State.

Former legislators M. Dharma Rao and T. Rajeswar Rao objected to the State government giving up Kanthanapalli project after two years of work and spending Rs.100 crore. No other project as being claimed by the TRS leaders would substitute the Kanthanapalli project that envisaged irrigation of 7.5 lakh acres in Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda districts.

“Kanthanapally is the only hope for the farmers in these three districts. But, thanks to the Chief Minister, their only hope of receiving water for irrigation was ditched. If a barrage is built at Thupakulagudem instead of Kanthanapally, these three districts will become desert,” they observed.

The BJP leaders said State government failed to respond on the ongoing farming crisis. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Ministers were not talking on the farmers’ suicides or the steps being taken to prevent them.

Compounding the problems, the Chief Minister himself was taking unilateral decisions on irrigation projects even without consulting the officials setting a bad precedent.

The BJP demanded an all party meeting on the pending irrigation projects.
