The residents of NSP Camp Colony here protested against the revenue officials’ move to demolish a few dilapidated unoccupied residential quarters of Nagarjunasagar Project (Tekulapalli circle) staff in the core area of the town on Tuesday.
Mild tension broke out in the NSP Camp Colony in the afternoon when the authorities had arrived in the colony along with earthmoving machinery to demolish a dilapidated NSP quarter.
Khammam Revenue Divisional Officer Vinay Krishna Reddy and others reached the spot situated close to the unoccupied E-87 quarter, which collapsed last month.
A section of local residents mainly comprising the NSP retired employees and their family members staged a demonstration in front of the machinery opposing the demolition drive
The revenue officials asserted that only the dilapidated unoccupied NSP quarters, which were earlier declared unsafe for dwelling by a team of technical experts, will be demolished to ensure public safety.
The officials cited the notices earlier served by the authorities of the Khammam Municipal Corporation on the occupants of the old NSP quarters to vacate the unsafe dwellings. However, the protesters apprised the revenue authorities of the unresolved issue of lack of housing and their pending applications with the government for allotment of the NSP quarters to them. The residents continued their protest forcing the revenue authorities to drop their move.
