Scores of students thronged Public Gardens where the city police held an Open House as part of the police martyrs commemoration week here on Thursday. Different wings of the department – including dog squad, bomb disposal squad, clues, and finger printing – put on display their tools for the benefit of the public. The students who visited the venue posed for photographs holding weapons as police officers, including Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu, explained the functioning of the AK-47 rifle and other weapons.
‘Tough job’
Mr. Sudheer Babu said the Open House was being held to come close to people and let them know how the police department works. “No job is easy job. When people know the difficulties of the police, they learn to understand and appreciate us. This is one occasion that helps us interact with people, particularly youngsters,” he said. Many personnel get killed or die while discharging their duties protecting life and property . The personnel derive great satisfaction in serving the society and such a spirit should be inculcated by youth as well, he added.
Harish, a degree student, sharing his joy, said he saw for the first time how the bomb disposal squad works. “It is terrible. The police risk a lot in these operations,” he said.
The Open House is on till October 21 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., police cultural troupe Jagruthi would conduct cultural programs on superstitions, road accidents, child marriages and other social evils.
