Multiple-entry visas don’t prescribe frequency of travel

I have a 10-year multiple-entry visa for the U.S. Is there a rule that I have to travel to the U.S. within six months of my first visit?

Revathi. P

There is no specific time within which you have to travel. As long as you have a valid U.S. visa, you may travel anytime up to the port of entry. Permission to enter the United States and how long you may stay in the U.S. is determined by officials at the port of entry.

I have a valid H1B visa. My husband is in the U.S. on an L1-A visa. If I apply for an L2 visa, will my stamped H1B visa get cancelled?

Shruthi

The H1B visa will not be cancelled if your L2 visa gets approved. However, the H1B is only valid for the company that petitioned you, which is annotated on the visa.

I reside in Bengaluru. I am planning to apply for an L1 visa. Can I attend an L1 visa interview at the Hyderabad Consulate?

Naresh. P

Applicants applying for individual L visas (L1B and L1A individuals) may apply at any of the four Consulates or the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. If you are applying for a blanket L1A or L1B visa, you have to schedule an appointment at the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai.

My son received a letter from San Jose State University granting him admission for pursuing a Master’s programme in software engineering. Can he show my provident fund statement from my employer and fixed deposit receipts as evidence of being able to fund his education?

Rajani Pereira

Consular officers look at the totality of a student’s profile during their interview to assess whether they meet the qualifications for a visa class. The student needs to demonstrate to the officer that s/he can afford to pay for their education and live in the United States. It’s up to you how you want to do that. Be prepared to show financial evidence that you, or whoever is sponsoring the student, have sufficient funds to pay for the first year, and a plan for funding the remaining period of intended study.

My passport will expire in 2016. My U.S. visa, which is valid until 2021, is stamped on this passport. If I renew my passport in 2016, would I have to apply for a new visa?

P. Bheem Reddy

As long as you have a valid U.S. visa, you can travel to the U.S., even if the visa is in the old, cancelled passport. You must carry both the valid passport and the old passport at the time of travel.
