With the launch of the e-challan system a fortnight ago, the Karimnagar Commissionerate of Police have made helmets for two-wheeler riders mandatory in the district from February 1.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police V.B. Kamalasan Reddy said the any two-wheeler rider not wearing helmet would be penalised as per law by sending e-challans.

While car drivers have been urged to wear seat belt while driving, Mr. Reddy said e-challans would be issued to autorickshaw drivers if they overload the vehicle and more than one person sits in the driver seat. He also informed that they would launch a special drive against minors driving two-wheelers in the town.

The traffic police has issued 4,326 e-challans since the system was launched and imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh in Karimnagar town alone, he said, adding that the e-challan system would be extended to the entire district as well as in cases of drunk driving.

Later, the Commissioner released posters educating the people to wear helmets and avoid fine through e-challan. Additional DCP Srinivas and traffic inspector Seetha Reddy were also present.
