Govt. should promote rainwater harvesting

June 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST

Twin cities facing water crisis notwithstanding, the municipal bodies are according permission indiscriminately to dig bore-wells deeper in search of groundwater. Erratic monsoon in the past few years has only added to the woes of the residents of Hyderabad and the only panacea to address water shortage lies in rainwater harvesting. The GHMC should come forward and take the initiative to encourage and ensure presence of rainwater harvesting pits in residential apartment complexes and commercial establishments. Like Swachh Hyderabad programme, the State government should direct the civic body to launch an awareness campaign on the importance of having rainwater harvesting pits in the city.

Leave Bison Polo Grounds alone

The State government’s proposal to construct a new secretariat in Bison Polo grounds and the apparent positive attitude of top defence officials towards the plan is surprising.

One should realise that the entire stretch of the parade grounds, polo grounds and all the other sports grounds in and around that area fall under a special category corridor and cannot be used for purposes like building a secretariat, proposed by the Chief Minister. Before making any promises, it would be better for the ministers to study the previous documentation on this issue. It may be recalled that previous attempts to provide the grounds for the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government have failed. In this background, it is surprising as to how MPs are making generous promises, thus giving a false hope to the Telangana government.
