Craze for management seats increases as counselling gets delayed

July 20, 2014 10:58 pm | Updated July 07, 2016 11:49 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The anticipated delay in engineering admissions is proving to be a boon for some engineering colleges as the craze for management quota seats has increased due to the uncertainty.

This is more so in Andhra Pradesh colleges where parents seem to have decided not to send their children to Telangana and instead prefer a seat there itself. Surprisingly, it is not just the colleges figuring in the ‘good’ category that are benefiting.

Proximity seems to be driving the parents while approaching the colleges apart from reducing the pressure being built up over admission delay. Parents are not thinking twice as fee in the convenor and management quota is same now.

Correspondents of some colleges agreed that they are eager to give away seats since there is no guarantee that students will opt for their colleges in the counselling whenever it starts. The demand in sought-after colleges is obviously more and parents don’t mind to pay extra for a seat. Interestingly, the GO concerning the management quota (Category B) admissions is yet to be issued.

The top 30 colleges have already completed the process with the seats reserved and now parents are turning to the next level of colleges, said a correspondent seeking anonymity for obvious reasons. “Parents are worried about the inordinate delay in admissions and want to play safe reserving a seat.”

Meanwhile, colleges in Telangana region, particularly in and around Hyderabad are worried that their numbers will dwindle as AP students are shying away for various reasons. About 154 colleges in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district had huge following among AP students who preferred them for getting exposure to city life and expecting better job opportunities.

A correspondent said that by this time there used to be several enquiries for admissions and agents appointed by them used to allure students with various sops. “But nativity norm denying them fee reimbursement and reluctance of parents to send their children to Hyderabad now has cast a shadow.”

However, colleges in demand aren’t losing much as they continue to be thronged with requests for seats. They are charging not less than Rs. 10 lakh for an ECE seat and around Rs. 8 lakh for a Computer Science and Mechanical seat depending on the craze for the college and its quality.

Illegal

Officials, however, say that filling up management seats is “illegal” now and they can initiate action if students come with evidence. But they agree that managements are always cautious not to give any receipts to any admitted student.
