District leaders of the Congress on Friday staged a massive dharna in front of the Collectorate in protest against the removal of hoardings featuring party president Sonia Gandhi by municipal authorities during Telangana Formation Day celebrations.

Party activists led by district president K. Mruthyunjayam, Jagtial MLA T. Jeevan Reddy, former MP Ponnam Prabhakar, former government whip Arepalli Mohan, former Zilla Parishad chairman A. Laxman Kumar, town Congress president K. Rajashekhar, Mahila Congress president G. Jayashree and others took part in the day-long dharna.

Tension prevailed when the Congress activists tried to barge into the premises demanding that the government reinstall the hoardings in Karimnagar town. Police foiled the attempts by arresting the agitators.

Party leaders flayed the TRS government for removing the hoardings of Ms. Gandhi, who they said had fulfilled the dream of a separate Telangana State. The party leaders said they had been denied municipal permission to erect the hoardings due to pressure from the ruling TRS.
