Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar on Thursday inaugurated a food distribution centre christened ‘Annapurna canteen’ at Pavilion Grounds here marking the formal launch of ₹ 5-a-meal scheme in the town.

The canteen was opened as part of the Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC)-funded subsidised meal scheme for poor people.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (APF) will supply hygienically prepared meals at ₹ 5 per plate, sources said.

Plans are afoot to set up four to five more such canteens at Gandhi Chowk, Bus Stand and various other major centres under KMC limits to extend the subsidised meal scheme to at least 1500 to 2000 poor people daily, sources added.
