In a rare gesture, special teams formed by the Nalgonda police, in association with Amma Nanna Ashram, traced 104 mentally ill persons across Nalgonda district in the past couple of days as part of their ‘Punar Janma’ (rebirth) programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Superintendent of Police Vikram Jeet Duggal, said they aimed at reuniting all these persons with their families after providing treatment and housing to them in Amma Nanna Ashram located near Choutuppal.
They were brought to the District Police headquarters here on Thursday where their heads were tonsured and they were given new clothes.
Mr. Duggal said that the police earlier used to donate Rs. 4,000 every month to Amma Nanna Ashram for the welfare of these persons, which had been increased to Rs. 70,000 two months ago.
The police also managed to trace the nativity of 79 out of 104 persons, which include 30 women.
Special teams
Special teams that were constituted by Mr. Duggal are on the job to trace the families of the rest.
Energy Minister G. Jagadishwar Reddy appreciated the police and founder of the Ashramam, Gattu Shankar, for taking up the initiative. Lions Club of Nalgonda has donated Rs. 50,000 to the Ashram.
Collector P. Satyanarayana Reddy, District Principal Judge P. Ananta Padmanaba Swamy, Nakrekal MLA Vemula Veeresham, MLC Karne Prabhakar and others were present.
