Women protesters put up a brave front

July 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - VEMULAGHAT (MEDAK DIST.):

“Why should you cry? Fight on the issue and save your lands. We were born here and will die here. Our bodies will be here in this soil. We will not vacate this village,” said Talamina Lakshmi, a resident of this village while addressing women.

The women were seen shedding tears even as there was a discussion over submergence of villages under the proposed construction of Mallannasagar reservoir. The women gathered here to participate in a programme organised by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), which was attended by its chairman M. Kodandarama.

Ms. Lakshmi suddenly rose from the crowd even as the discussions were on, and appealed women not to cry. “What will you achieve by crying? Just fight back. By fighting back alone can we protect ourselves, and not by crying,” she said. However, she too lost her cool and wept in the end, asking where will they go if forced to vacate. “We want our bodies to be buried here, come what may,” she said.
