Ponnala, the lone ranger

July 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:09 pm IST - GAJWEL (MEDAK DISTRICT):

Police were at every point and there was no escape for anybody as they were stopping every vehicle that came that way. The security check posts were all around the villages leading to Erravalli, Vemulaghat and Pallapahad.

Surprisingly, crossing all these hurdles, former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ponnla Lakshmaiah, 74, reached Singaram, the first village that would face submergence by the proposed Mallannasagar, and proceeded towards Erravalli, when he was arrested.

“We started our journey at Thumkunta, after Alwal in the city. Then we reached Ramkol behind Mediciti Hospital. From there were travelled to Wadiaram, Chegunta and Ramayampet. The journey took about two-and-a-half hours, some times by car, sometimes by motorcycle, we even walked for one-and-a-half kilometre. We have walked even on skidding boundaries of farms to reach those villages,” Mr. Lakshmaiah told The Hindu .
