Man attempts suicide as daughter is denied job opportunity

August 26, 2015 01:45 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 04:50 pm IST - TADEPALLIGUDEM (West Godavari):

A man doused himself with kerosene on Wednesday morning at Unguturu of Chebrolu mandal of West Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh due to alleged injustice done to his daughter by District Selection Committee (DSC) during selection of teachers based on `nativity’ after the State bifurcation.

This is the first case that came to light among the `Teacher' job aspirants through DSC, who were allegedly denied jobs by the State Government on the basis of nativity.

According to Bheemavaram DSP Soumyalatha, the incident took place at around 6.00 a.m. when Sundarapu Durgaprasad poured kerosene on himself and lit fire, then started shouting for help. Family members and neighbours rushed him to Tadepalligudem Area Hospital. The Government resident doctor said that the condition of Mr. Durgaprasad was stable and he had 30 per cent burns on lower part of the body from his waist.

Grave injustice

Nikhila, daughter of Mr. Durgaprasad, who was not given a chance to write the DSC examination last time, said that she studied only 5 years in Hyderabad and rest of her studies were in Unguturu and Tadepalliguem. “Then, how, the Government was treating me as non-local? If I want to write examinations in Telangana, they will not allow. How can I support my family which is in a pathetic financial condition,” she said. She described (bifurcation) it as a grave injustice done to the people of Andhra Pradesh.

Sudden reaction

According to Nikhila her father came to know about the news with regard to nativity applicability and went into depression. He suddenly took the extreme step on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to media persons, Mr. Durgaprasad who is working in a small hotel in his village said that her daughter Nikhila had studied from Classes 6 to 10 in Hyderabad and rest of her studies were in Tadepalligudem including preparation for the DSC.

He said that they were having many aspirations from her job as that would be their livelihood. But, he stated that the court judgment on nativity issue and State Government’s negligence had forced him to take this extreme step.

He said that he made many representations to the Chief Minister, Education Minister and other ministers several times on her daughter’s issue, but there was no response at all. “The TDP Government failed to give any reply to my letters and also utterly failed in getting Special Status as it is only the solution to the problems faced by thousands and lakhs of students in this new State,” Mr. Durgaprasad stated.

He further added that the special status to the State would definitely do justice to the students who had complications in their nativity status like her daughter.
