A fourth standard student died after drowning in the swimming pool of Bhashyam School in Old Alwal on Thursday.

The body of Surya, 10, was found lying along the swimming pool’s platform around 3.30 p.m. There were no students or teachers in the school as a holiday was declared following bandh call given in the area by some students’ unions.

“The boy left home on his bicycle telling his mother that he was going to school. As he didn’t return home till 3 p.m. she came to the school only to find the body on the pool platform,” Alwal Inspector S.V. Hari Krishna said. Police believe the boy, along with other friends, came to the pool but the guard and other workers of the school failed to notice them.

The Inspector said other students must have pulled out Surya’s body after he drowned in the pool water and fled after leaving it on the pool’s platform. A criminal case of rash and negligent act resulting in death under Section 304-A of Indian Penal Code was registered against the school management.
